Shade Cloth Barrier

Shade Cloth Barrier for Farming Selection Tips

A shade cloth barrier can be used in farming for various reasons, some of which are briefly discussed below.

Protection of Plants against Insects

Insects and butterflies cause major problems in greenhouses. Night butterflies can cause havoc in a crop. For such a mono-filament net with around 16% shading and 22% white will do. The shade protection should be between 35 and 90% and can be in grey or black. For protection against flies and insects of the same size mesh netting can be used. This type of shade cloth also provides a barrier against mite infestation.

Nets for Protection against Weather Elements

Hail, frost, and windy conditions are factors that can reduce the success of a crop. Seedlings are especially vulnerable. Black shading can be used for plants needing shade, especially tropical plants. Wind barriers range from 50 to around 80% protection through cloth that can withstand the wind in the growth area. The net should also be selected to fit the specific structure. Calculate 1 meter wind-barrier for every 10 meter of structure used.

Hail Protection

Orchards and flowers are particularly vulnerable when it comes to hail damage. Fruits or flowers damaged by hail will not sell on the market and if you planting to export, it is advisable to protect against hail by using a shade cloth barrier made from white and black mono-filaments.

Frost Protection

If you farm in a frost prone region of the country, rather make the shade net investment to provide an adequate barrier against the devastating effect of frost.  Black shading with 50% or more protection should work for most plants where the temperature doesn’t drop below zero. If you farm in an area where temperature can drop sub-zero, you should go with the 60 to 80% protection.

Protection against Birds

Most types of shade netting work for protection against birds. Farmers often cover vineyards and fish breeding ponds with cloth barriers to protect against birds. You can use a lighter mono-filament type for this type of protection.

Shade Cloth Barrier against Radiation

Not only plants, but also animals need protection against harmful radiation. Animal sheds can be covered in black shading providing 60% up protection. Note that if the net has a higher density it will provide better protection against wind, but only if the structure is strong enough to withstand sudden winds. The higher the density of the structure, the less ventilation there will be, so it is important to create a balance or provide additional ventilation if you go with 80 to 90% protection.

For poultry dens you must ensure that the cloth covering the den is not in contact with the roof. Use double netting in the poultry den and for external structure covering select any cloth offering 60% up density and protection.

If netting is used in a hothouse to protect plants you will need to select the shade cloth barrier according to the plant type. For mobile screen applications you can select netting of 60-70%.

We provide shades for nurseries where such are used to protect against weather elements and for tissue based reproduction, garden plant nurseries, and growth of spices as well as vegetables. For spices we recommend any of the black nets with a 50% up rating. For cucumbers during the warmer season you will want an additional radiation protection, provided through nets.

Apart from agricultural based netting, we furthermore supply shade barriers for vehicles and for usage in the building industries where protective barriers are a necessity. For more information on the availability of shade cloth barriers and for quotes simply get in contact with our consultants.
